Hockey Canada CEO Michael Brind’Amour is stepping down from his post

The chairman of Hockey Canada’s board of directors said he resigned from his post Friday night.

Michael Brind’Amour resigned when he was asked to reform Hockey Canada’s leadership over how it was handling recent allegations of sexual assault against players, including two alleged incidents from 2003 and 2018.

In a statement released on Saturday, Brind’Amour said his last term will end in November 2022, but he has decided to step down because “there is no need to wait for a new era”.

Hockey Canada said the board and members would meet in the coming days to discuss next steps and appoint an interim chairman.

Brind’Amour said “immediate action” is critical for Hockey Canada to address the “important challenges facing our organization and our sport.”

“I would not be able to push through this renewal and have therefore announced my resignation as a board member.”

Brind’Amour said he “listened carefully and attentively to the comments that Canadians had about the culture of our sport and our organization and about our actions and leadership.”

“I understand that the actions we have taken over the past few weeks are part of the solution.”

Brind’Amour said he was “reassured” that former Supreme Court Justice Thomas Cromwell would help the organization “make the necessary changes”.

Hockey Canada said the governance review is “an integral part of Hockey Canada’s plan of action” announced in July to address “toxic” behavior in the organization.

Hockey Canada’s next board election will be held at the November 2022 annual convention.
