Helen Uffner Dresses Hollywood in Perfect Historical Detail. Now she faces deportation.

Among the glittering glass towers of Long Island City, at the end of Orchard Street, was an old three-story warehouse with a crumbling gray exterior, flanked by a broken barbed-wire fence.

Through a heavy steel door, down a dark tunnel, Helen Uffner ran her 8,000-square-foot “museum,” with thousands of people from the mid-1800s to the 1980s. vintage garments which she has been assembling for over 40 years. Uffner, 70 years old and her barn is secretly open about New York filmmakers, fashion and costume designers, and stage producers who depend on her to rent the right vintage clothing and accessories for their productions.

“For me, vintage clothing is an art form,” says Uffner. “People might think, ‘Oh my gosh, you’ve done so many projects and you have to make a lot of money!’ But I think I do it for love.”
