‘Hard Knocks’ Power Rankings: Frank Reich and Jonathan Taylor take big wins in Week 2 of the Colts series of the season

One week for Indianapolis Colts, who crossed the .500 mark for the first time this year after a 41-15 margin of victory before Buffalo Bills. The Colts are one of the hottest teams in NFL, won five of the last six after starting 1-3. Indianapolis looks like a playoff team, even if the Colts weren’t among the seven teams that made it to the AFC knockout stages after 11 weeks.

This week’s “Hard Knocks” showcases the Colts’ preparation for a head-to-head with the Bills and all the factors that led to a convincing victory. DeForest Buckner and head coach Frank Reich were featured on Episode 2, two of the easy winners from a big week in Indianapolis.

Winner: Frank Reich

Reich’s return to Buffalo was more emotional for him than he had imagined. The emotion on Reich’s face after the Colts blew the Bills made Reich very emotional after his team played well for all 60 minutes. Reich even received the ball of the game for how his team performed.

“There’s no other group of men I’d want to be with. This is a special group of men,” said Reich. “We’ve been saying that all year, and it’s just starting to come together.”

Reich admits he’s returned to Buffalo enough as a player and coach that the emotions leading up to the game are almost gone, but beat the team for which he’s become a folk hero – and being the guy who knocked the Colts out of the knockout stages last year – is special to him.

The Colts made their own memories in Buffalo, just as Reich did when he played for the Bills. Buffalo fans were still cheering for Reich when he returned.

Winner: DeForest Buckner

Buckner is a player introduced by HBO this week. The Colts defender got the chance to meet Hall of Fame defender Bruce Smith – who was having dinner with Reich the night before the game. Smith and Reich were the Bills’ teammates during their heyday when they won four consecutive league championships.

Both Reich and Smith were sitting with special team ace Steve Tasker (whom Buckner apparently didn’t know) when Buckner came to the table. The Colts Pro Bowl defender was honored to meet Smith, who had a lot of praise for him after the exchange.

“He’s a nice guy,” Smith told Reich.

“That guy’s right there, he’s real,” Reich replied to Smith. “In every way.”

Fans may want to ask Stewart an invite to watch “Thursday Night Football” next week. The Colts’ defensive tactics make for some delicious grilled chicken, which are seasoned with sauces that include plenty of Sweet Baby Ray’s barbecue sauce, butter, and a splash of soda. Stewart may be one of the few people who seasoned chicken in his sink – or to get “all the seasoning on it”.

“I just put anything in there to make it taste good,” says Stewart. The reviews from the Colts defense show how good Stewart’s chicken is.

Taylor’s game day (5 touches) showed how special Sunday’s win was for Reich, a man who showed little emotion. Colts owner Jim Irsay appeared only once in this episode, congratulating Taylor on his franchise record. Taylor not only tied Eric Dickerson and Joseph Addai (four) for the fastest ground touches in a game in team history, he is the first player in Colts franchise history to score five ground hits in a single game.

Taylor received a surprise text from a Colts legend shortly after the win.

“I texted Edgerrin (former Colts and Hall of Fame rerun Edgerrin James) during the game,” Irsay said. “He’s a big fan of you.”

Taylor’s big day may have already begun when he saw it Marshawn Lynch out of the tunnel during pregnancy. Taylor easily detects old Invoices and Seahawks ran back and told him he had “a lot of respect.” Lynch replied, “Do your — work.”

It’s easy to see how that would motivate Taylor to have a fun afternoon.
