Halle Berry certainly didn’t have an easy time getting into the comfortable director’s chair for her first directing, Bruises. In a recent interview on Vanity Fair, the star said her six-hour workout sessions in the gym go into building her MMA fighter figure. The training overlaps with her filming time John Wick 3 and the actor says she drew inspiration from Wick star Keanu Reeves, marveling at the 57-year-old’s ability to pull off challenging action sequences.
Reflecting on her own training for BruisesBerry said, “When I started coaching John Wick, I knew Bruised was coming. I got an offer to make those movies at the same time. So the beauty of that is that when I coach John Wick, I also coach Bruises at the same time, in a small way. Part of that training was just getting my body used to working out five or six hours a day. I’m changing my diet, learning about recovery. I really pushed myself to the limit and I knew that was what I had to do for Bruised. It was a big time when I knew I was going to make these two movies in a row that would challenge me like I’ve never been challenged before. “
In Bruises, the actor/director plays former UFC fighter Jackie “Pretty Bull” Justice, who has overcome many challenges to earn a new spot in the Mixed Martial Arts title. Bruised hit number one most watched on Netflix after it was released on the service, prompting them to offer Berry an even more movie deal to allow her to add to her directorial profile.
Berry is already known to many audiences for her work in blockbuster movies such as X Men James Bond films and franchises but also in critically acclaimed works such as Monster ‘Ball for which she won an Acadamy Award for her performance. Bruised marks a new chapter in Berry’s career, and the new Netflix contract ensures we’ll see more of her behind the scenes of her filming efforts in the years to come.
However, the star does not seem to disappear behind the camera. She is scheduled to appear next in director Rolan Emmerich’s sci-fi disaster film Moonfall, which will hit theaters in February 2022.
