Hacks season 2 trailer teases May return date for HBO Max comedy

Fan favorite and Emmy Award-winning HBO Max comedy Hacks will be back for a second season, and a new trailer released on Thursday will tease what can be expected. For about 30 seconds, the trailer flashes through snapshots of the character’s full range of emotions – and lots of dancing – set to the tune of Mama Cass singing “Make Your Own Kind of Music”. Hacks season 2 is scheduled to land on HBO Max on May 12.

The show follows Deborah Vance (Jean Smart), an elderly Las Vegas comedian who works with young writer Ava Daniels (Hannah Einbinder) to find common ground between generations.

In Polygon’s review of Hacks season 1, Joshua Rivera commended the show’s ability to hide dramatic moments in low-key shots. “The show wasn’t always a hit – Ava felt constrained and dull compared to Deborah Vance’s efforts, fueled by Jean Smart’s performance,” he wrote. “But how could Deborah not be this way? You just yell at the doctor like her when you know why the doctor doesn’t take you seriously, and what could happen if you don’t force them.”
