Live stream killing

The shooter live-streamed the shooting, in which he mainly targeted black shoppers, on streaming platform Twitch for at least two minutes before the service ended its broadcast.

The suspected shooter’s name is Payton Gendron from Conklin, a city in upstate New York about 200 miles from Buffalo.

Police said he shot 11 black and two white victims before surrendering to police.

He was reported to have shot four people outside the store, fatally three, before entering the store and shooting at those inside.

Guard Aaron Salter, a retired Buffalo police officer, fired multiple shots, hitting the gunman once.

But he was wearing a bulletproof vest and it had no effect – the gunman then killed Salter before targeting other victims.

When confronted, the gunman held his gun to his own neck, but police persuaded him to drop the gun and arrested him.

He later appeared before a judge in a paper doctor’s coat and was charged with first-degree murder.

Racially motivated attack

The shooting was labeled a hate crime by Erie County Sheriff John Garcia.

In addition, US broadcaster CBS reported that the shooter shouted racial slurs during the attack and that a racial slur was written on his gun.

Stephen Belongia of the Buffalo office of the FBI said, “We are investigating this incident as both a hate crime and a case of racially motivated violent extremism.”

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul said: “I sincerely hope that this person, this white supremacist who just committed a hate crime against an innocent community, spends the rest of his days behind bars. And heaven help him in the world to come.”

President Joe Biden reacts to Buffalo shooting

US President Joe Biden issued a statement in response to the shooting, praising the bravery of first responders.

Biden said: “Tonight we mourn the families of ten people who senselessly lost their lives and all who are suffering the physical and emotional wounds of this horrific shooting.

“We are grateful for the courage of law enforcement members and other first responders who took immediate action to try to protect and save lives.

“The First Lady and I are praying for the victims and their families, and hearts across the country are with the people of Buffalo.”
