Govt to seek action against opposition members over ‘misbehaviour’ in Rajya Sabha: Sources

The government will seek action against several opposition MPs accused of misconduct with treasury bench members in the Rajya Sabha on Thursday after TMC MP snatches documents from Information Technology Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw and tore those things up as he was about to make a statement about alleged snooping.

Government sources said some opposition MPs were “behaving inappropriately” with members of the treasury bench, including a minister, even after the House of Commons was adjourned.

“We are approaching president Rajya Sabha to seek action against them as their behavior is a blow to parliament,” said a Union minister, who did not wish to be named.

Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Shantanu Sen get papers from Vaishnaw after TMC, Conference and other opposition party members, who had previously been forced to postpone two proceedings in the Rajya Sabha, rushed into the well of the House of Commons when the minister was called to issue a statement about the Pegasus snooping.

Government sources said Rajya Sabha Leader Piyush Goyal and his deputy Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi contacted Opposition members and assured them that the minister would answer their questions after he made his statement, but to no avail.

With Vaishnaw unable to read the complete statement, it was placed on the table and the House adjourned.

However, the situation is still tense in the House of Representatives when the two sides have lively exchanges.

Sen alleges that Union Minister Hardeep Puri verbally abused him in The Senate and was ready to attack him before he was rescued by his colleagues. Puri has so far not commented on the matter.

Decision Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) described opposition behavior as a “new low” in Parliament.
