Google’s Doodle celebrates the Tokyo Olympics with a sports RPG

Google Doodles for Opening day afterward Tokyo Olympics 2020 is actually a full size video game. Doodle Champion Island Game is a classic top-down RPG-style sports adventure with seven minigame events and a global leaderboard.

The player-controlled star is Lucky the Ninja Cat, who landed on Champion Island and found a four-year celebration of the sports competition already underway.


In each minigame, Lucky faces a different animal inhabitant on Champion Island. Table tennis is played against the bird-like Tengu; Skateboarding (very similar to Atari .’s 1986 classic sport) 720 °) have Tanuki for the opponent; Archery against Yoichi, a samurai general; Rugby has a sumo-like Oni, with “Momotaro and friends” supporting the player’s team.

In Swim, the player faces Princess Otohime and her turtle, trying to match a highway of scrolling notes. Climbing’s opponent is the owl-like Fukuro, and in Marathon (actually a long, side-scrolling obstacle course) the player faces Kijimuna.


At the beginning of Doodle Champion Island, players can arrange in four teams (Blue Ushi; Red Karasu; Yellow Inari and Green Kappa) to score their points on the global leaderboard. Up to the time of publication, Team Red easily leads with more than 42 million points.

“We’re glad we were able to allude to different stories from Hokkaido in the north to Okinawa in the south in Doodle,” the studio’s developers wrote in the Q&A with Google. “Besides taking inspiration from stories known all over Japan, we also hope to convey the country’s rich and varied natural beauty, including underwater, tropical beaches. full of sand, forests and snowy mountains.”
