Samsung’s SSD 980 is confusingly named, but this NVMe PCIe 3.0 drive has it in place – performance. It supports read speeds of up to 3500MB/s, and costs much less than the company’s higher-end Evo and Pro drives. Today, the 500GB and 1TB models are discounted on Scan, inspiring copy-cat deals on Amazon.
As it stands, the 500GB model is currently the cheapest there, at £49.99, while the 1TB model is the cheapest at Scan at £94.98. Both are among some of the best prices we’ve seen for these drives.
So why is the SSD 980 worth considering? Well, Katharine went into the deep details of her 980 SSD Review, but its short-term point is that this drive outperforms the 2.5-inch SATA-based options that were previously the best value options, by a factor of about six to one. You see, SATA drives are limited by the SATA interface to around 550MB/s in the best case, so NVMe drives like the SSD 980 can achieve amazingly faster sequential read and write speeds. – up to 3500MB/s and 3000MB/s, respectively.
Random read and write speeds are more of the same, so overall game load times will only be slightly faster, but that could change in the future as DirectStorage becomes a thing – and cross-platform titles expect incredibly fast NVMe SSD storage built into both next-gen consoles. Simply put, NVMe drives like these are a much more future-proof proposition, and they’re among the fastest PCIe 3.0 drives out there – so you don’t even need an AMD 500 motherboard. -series or Intel 500-series preferred to use it. Nice.
In any case, these are some of the lowest prices we’ve seen on these drives, with 1TB only dropped to £89 once before, so they’re worth picking up if you want to add a new drive or you’re building a new PC!
