Glitches and clippings of Russian military propaganda from Chechen fighters in Ukraine

Fighters from Russia’s Chechen Republic recruited for the war in Ukraine have made videos of their attempts to look brave and powerful in war. But the videos appear to be staged, according to outtakes obtained by Ukrainian intelligence officials from one of the militants.

The outtakes show several fighters who appear to be giggling while handling guns and firing into a forest of trees, according to footage obtained by the Ukrainian Security Service (SBU) from one of the fighters’ phones. According to the SBU, the fighters were fighting and not actually shooting at anyone.

It turns out that “rather than with Ukrainian defenders, these ‘Putinians’ are fighting heroically with … pine trees in the forests of the Luhansk region,” the SBU said in a statement mocking the videos.

Other videos show the suspected Chechen militants dancing in front of their vehicles while firing other weapons.

It’s just the latest update from Ukraine that seems to show that Russian President Vladimir Putin’s forces are faltering. Reports have roiled for months that Russia is losing so many troops in the war due to a series of military planning and logistical blunders that it has had to seek alternative sources of labor, including by forcing Chechens to go to Ukraine.

According to reports from several human rights organizations, people in the Russian Republic of Chechnya recently claim that they are being forced to fight against their will in Ukraine, under threats from local authorities that they will be prosecuted if they do not cooperate.

According to Avril Haines, the director of US intelligence, the Russians have also resorted to Russian-backed mercenaries from private contractor Wagner Group.

And just in the last week, Ukrainian fighters effectively destroyed a unit of Wagner group fighters, except for some survivors, according to the SBU.

Overall, the Russian military has lost 30,500 soldiers since Putin started the war in February nearly 100 days ago, according to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

Russian forces have encountered other roadblocks in recent days, particularly struggling to obtain adequate supplies and food, and are now resorting to eating dogs, according to messages between Russian fighters intercepted by Ukrainian intelligence.

Even high-ranking Russian officers in the military are less and less enthusiastic about the war. Two Russian colonels were caught in a wiretapped phone call badmouthing “motherfucker” Putin about his plans in Ukraine and all the Russian military casualties.

“There are terrible losses of our boys, shit,” one of them is said to have said in the call, according to a recording of the Ukrainian secret service.

The falling morale comes as many countries work to increase pressure on Russia and further isolate Moscow from the rest of the world. The European Union announced on Monday that it plans to partially ban Russian oil imports in order to limit Russia’s available funds to support the war in Ukraine. The Russian stock market has already collapsed after the news.
