Italy’s Fire Brigade is investigating whether two devastating fires on either side of fashion designer Giorgio Armani’s multi-million dollar summer home on an exclusive Italian island were started by arsonists.
The fires erupted within minutes on the remote island of Pantelleria, famous for its sweet desert passito wine and home to a number of celebrities who maintain summer villas there.
Armani, who was hosting several dozen people at his home, used his private yacht to evacuate his guests and some neighbors as the fire neared, according to the Italian Fire Brigade. The guests were then transferred to another ship and taken to safety around 60 miles away on the island of Sicily.
Two Canadair firefighting planes were deployed to douse the flames before entering Armani’s mansion. The damage was limited to the palm forest on the edge of his property, as the Armani press office said in a statement.
Known as the “black pearl” of the Mediterranean, the island has come under scrutiny for ignoring building codes, which has allowed A-listers like Madonna, Julia Roberts, Sting and Joseph Fiennes to build villas that it probably would not be allowed in other European countries. In 2003, several construction sites were confiscated and private footpaths down to the sea – which are illegal – were blocked. In the late 1980s, Gérard Depardieu was fined for using the remains of ancient Arabic farmhouses known as Dammusoto build a garden wall. Truman Capote also had a lavish mansion on the island.
Armani’s press office said he would return to the island once the fire department gave the all-clear.
