George Wein, Newport music festival founder and innovative promoter, dies at 95

Mr. Wein and his firm, Pageant Productions, grew to become globally identified, with festivals in France, England, Germany and the Netherlands, in addition to in Asia. In 1978, he produced a jazz pageant on the White Home, with President Jimmy Carter standing alongside Dizzy Gillespie, half-singing, half-speaking Gillespie’s comical bebop tune “Salt Peanuts” till the president dissolved in laughter.
