Former Texas Governor and US President George W. Bush now holds another leadership title: Masterclass Instructor. The former President offers advice to students on how to cultivate “Authentic Leadership” for the latest entry in the MasterClass Presents the White House series. Other topics covered in his course are “Accountability leads to results”, “One’s own communication style” and “Crisis management”. Of course, the 43rd POTUS bases his lessons on his experiences during his time in the Oval Office (2001-2009), including an instantaneous collapse of 9/11, navigating the administration’s initial response to the 2008 financial crisis, and dealing with several others Emergencies and natural disasters, including Hurricane Katrina.
Bush’s three-hour course (divided into several thematic sections) covers leadership principles and advice, of course, but the former commander-in-chief also seems to use the masterclass to explain some of his most notorious mistakes and address the key historical critiques of his presidency, even during the trailer he speaks the uncertainty of geopolitical decision-making: “As President, I sometimes had information that the American people didn’t know, and I had to make decisions based on knowledge that wasn’t obvious… That’s just the nature of leadership.”
He also highlights what he believes to be the more positive and enduring aspects of his legacy, along with the strategies he employed when speaking to the American Presidency’s bully pulpit. “When I spoke to the audience, I didn’t want them to think I was smarter than them,” he explains. “One of the keys to communication is figuring out how to allow the other person to relax.” President or not, he seems to manage to provide relatable advice for the more common communication situations that students in the class are likely to actually experience.
Oh, and don’t worry – if you’re curious about Bush’s burgeoning art career (yes, he’s actually quite talented in the field, with an affinity for animal and pet portraiture), then in the final segment of his course, he invites us on a guided tour opens his painting studio and explains what made him take up his new hobby after his last term in office. Regardless of your opinion of the self-proclaimed “Master of Malaprop,” the former President offers a range of interesting and compelling topics available exclusively on MasterClass.
