G7 summit 2022: Dates, hosts and is Ukraine on the agenda?

The leaders of the world’s richest democracies will meet this month to discuss major global issues, and the invasion of Ukraine will be on the agenda
The G7 2022 will take place this month when world leaders from the seven member states and the EU meet to discuss and address pressing global issues.
It is the 48th such summit, and this year attention will focus on the war in Ukraine and the economic fallout it has unleashed.
This is everything you need to know about this year’s G7 summit, including where it’s taking place and what the issues are on the agenda.
What is the G7?
The Group of Seven, or G7, is an intergovernmental group made up of seven of the world’s largest economies and liberal democracies – together they account for nearly half of global GDP.
The members of the G7 are: Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom and the United States.
The European Union is an unnumbered member of the G7, meaning the group is represented at the summit but not recognized by name.
Russia became a member of the G7 (then called the G8) in 1997, but was expelled after the annexation of Crimea in 2014.
The G7 Summit is an annual gathering of the G7 to discuss the world’s most pressing issues.
When is the G7 summit?
This year’s G7 summit will take place from Sunday 26th June to Tuesday 28th June.
Which country is hosting the G7 summit?
Germany will host the G7 summit this year – it will be held at the posh Hotel Schloss Elmau in the Bavarian Alps.
Last year the summit took place in the UK and was hosted by Prime Minister Boris Johnson in Carbis Bay, Cornwall.
Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholtz is chairing this year’s summit. He took over the chancellorship from Angela Merkel last December, so this will be his first G7.
The goal of this year’s G7 presidency is “Progress towards a just world”.
Which topics are on the agenda of the G7 summit 2022?
The ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine, which began on February 24 and has so far claimed thousands of lives, will be a major item on this year’s agenda.
Scholtz said the war in Ukraine must not cause G7 leaders to neglect other pressing international issues.
Other topics include the global economic crises caused in part by the invasion and the aftermath of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Vaccine equity will also be a key talking point, as there are wide disparities in vaccination coverage and access between high- and low-income countries.
The ongoing climate emergency will also be a major topic of discussion, as the consequences of even a 1.5 degree rise in climate will be severe.
What is said about Russia and Ukraine?
The war in Ukraine is expected to dominate discussions for most of the summit.
G7 leaders will want to show a united front with Ukraine against Russian aggression, but must also find a way to overcome the economic impact the war and sanctions are having around the world.
The discussion of the war is expected to focus on how the G7 will address food distribution and shortage problems caused by the war.
Together, the G7 countries have provided billions in economic aid to Ukraine, sent weapons for use at the front, and imposed tough sanctions on Russia.
