G7 makes Putin the laughing stock of the “bare-chested horseman”.

The world may be in shambles, but G7 leaders were able to laugh — at the expense of Vladimir Putin and a 2009 photo of him shirtless horseback riding in the Siberian mountains.

The G7 Summit is a gathering of leaders from seven of the richest countries: Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the UK and the US, and the EU President. As the distinguished members sat down for lunch on Sunday, the Daily Mail reported that British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said, “Jackets on? jackets off? Shall we strip?” The embattled English leader continued, saying: “We must show that we are tougher than Putin.”

CNN reported that Prime Minister Justin Trudeau of Canada then chimed in, joking that they could go for a “shirtless horseback ride,” with Johnson quipping that they “needed to show them our pecs.” President Biden did not appear to join in the mockery.

However, Biden had some choice words for Putin that had nothing to do with his exhibitionism. Russian forces struck apartment buildings in Kyiv with rockets on Sunday morning, a move Biden denounced as “barbarism.”

This year’s G7 conference will focus, at least in part, on simultaneously remaining united against Putin and addressing the war’s devastating economic impact, including soaring food and gas prices. Biden announced that G7 leaders will ban gold imports from Russia, and leaders are likely to discuss tightening oil sanctions.

“You know, a big focus of the G7 and its leaders will be how not only to deal with the challenges in the global economy as a result of Mr. Putin’s war, but also how to hold Mr. Putin to account,” John Kirby, Strategic Coordinator Communications at the National Security Council, said.

As G7 leaders meet in Germany’s Bavarian Alps until June 28, they will continue to work on the world’s most pressing challenges. But maybe, just maybe, they’ll find the time to poke fun at another photo of Putin. Perhaps whichever of his falls during a hockey game would make worthy cocktail talk?
