Frozen Shield vs Hero Shield (which is better?) – FandomSpot

The Frozen Shield is usually the better choice when deciding between the Frozen Shield and the Hero Shield. It is widely considered to be one of the best shields in the game alongside the Ankh shield. This is due to its damage-reducing passive effects.

The frozen shield wraps a shell around you when your health drops below 50%. This grenade reduces damage taken by 25%.

Meanwhile, the hero shield ensures that enemies have a higher chance of attacking you.

Comparison & Statistics Breakdown

Note: The hero shield is the best shield if you just look at defense stats. It has the highest defense among all shields.

Frozen vs. Hero Shield passive effects

The two shields share the same first passive ability since most shields grant knockback immunity.

Also, both inherit the Paladin’s Shield passive as their second passive.

However, their third passives are quite different. The Frozen Shield passive comes from the effect of the Frozen Turtle Shell accessory, while the Hero Shield passive comes from the effect of the Flesh Knuckle accessory.

When the Frozen Shield effect is active, a small blue ball will appear flying around your character. This lets you know you’re taking less damage.

The hero shield has no visual effect, but you’ll likely notice an increased number of enemies coming your way. This is because of the aggro increase it gives you.

Shield Use Cases

It is difficult to compare the two shields as they serve two different roles.

The Frozen Shield is best when you’re playing solo, as the buff benefits you directly.

The Hero Shield is best used when playing co-op with others, as it allows you to take on a tank role if you wish.

What about the Ankh shield?

Before update 1.4, the Ankh Shield was widely considered to be the best shield in the game. Does that still hold?

Let’s compare it to the others.

A player equipped with the Ankh Shield / Terraria
A player equipped with the Ankh Shield

defense 4
Short info 1 Grants immunity to knockback and fire blocks
Short info 2 Grants immunity to most debuffs

This might seem overwhelming at first, but Terraria’s enemies are constantly hitting you with debuffs. This shield provides immunity to:

  • bleeding
  • silenced
  • Broken Armor
  • Slow
  • combustion
  • Weak
  • Confused
  • chilled
  • Cursed
  • Darkness
  • Poisoned

In general, if you can’t have both equipped, the Ankh Shield is better suited for exploration and normal combat. That way you won’t be caught off guard by a sudden debuff and die.

If you’re preparing to fight a boss, the Frozen Shield is arguably better.

You’ll likely be below 50% health for a significant portion of the fight, so the reduced passive damage will be effective.

What’s easier to do?

Both shields can be crafted at a Tinker’s Workshop.

Given the drop rates highlighted below, the Hero Shield seems to be the easiest to acquire. However, it’s still best to grind for the shield that benefits you the most.

Get the frozen shield

A Paladin Shield and a Frozen Turtle Shell are required to craft the Frozen Shield.

The Paladin’s Shield has a 9.33% drop chance from the Paladin opponent in Classic mode and a 13.56% chance in Expert/Master mode. They appear in the dungeon after defeating Plantera once.

The Frozen Turtle Shield has a 1% drop chance from the Ice Tortoise enemy in all modes. They spawn in the cave layer of the snow biome in hardmode.

Obtain the Hero Shield

A Paladin’s Shield and Meat Knuckles are required to craft the Hero’s Shield.

The Flesh Knuckles have a 20% drop chance from the Crimson Mimic enemy in all modes. Mimics start spawning underground once hardmode kicks in, but they’re pretty rare.

You can find Crimson Mimics specifically in the Crimson Underground. You can also create one manually using a Key of the Night.

The Night Key will spawn a Crimson Mimic when placed in an empty chest in a Crimson world. You can craft one with 15 Soul of Night at a workbench.
