French citizens will be sentenced to 6 months in prison for entering a bar or restaurant without a vaccine passport | Tech News

Welcome to the post-covid world. Today, French President Macron issued a 6-month prison decree for any French citizen entering a bar or restaurant without a vaccine passport. Proprietors who allow the unvaccinated into their establishments face a 1-year prison sentence and a €45,000 fine, according to a report from The Guardian. The new decree is expected to effect on August 1st.

The punishments are part of a draconian rule by the French government to force its citizens to get the coronavirus jab amidst multiple unruly protests across numerous major cities. Immediately after the announcement, there was a massive demonstration on the streets of Paris against the newly “annoncier French vaccine passport” with thousands of protesters chanting “freedom” and calling for the resignation of President Macron.

Early last week, President Emmanuel Macron announced that those unable to prove they’re vaccinated or a negative COVID test (at their own cost) will be banned from using public transport, entering a cinema, shopping mall, bar, cafe, restaurant, and other venues from August 1st.

People unable to present a valid health pass risk up to six months in prison and a fine of up to €10,000 (£8,500), according to the draft text of the law, while owners of “establishments welcoming the public” who fail to check patrons’ passes could go to jail for a year and be hit with a €45,000 fine,” The Guardian reported.

Meanwhile, on Bastille Day, about 20,000 French demonstrators nationwide protested against what some called a “dictatorship.”

Within 72 hours of the French learning they would soon need to be vaccinated or tested to go to the cafe, The Guardian also reported that more than 3 million had booked appointments and France had broken its vaccination record, administering 800,000 shots in a single day.

In a tweet, Dr. David Samadi wrote: “There will soon prison sentences attached to the new French law for vaccine passports. If you are caught in a restaurant without proof of vaccination, you face up to six months in jail. The restaurant owner faces up to a year for hosting you. Does that sound extreme?
