Frank Vogel: ‘Mind trickster’ Anthony Davis has no free throws against the Bucks; Lakers complain to the federation

MILWAUKEE – In the middle of the third quarter on Wednesday night, Anthony Davis leaked during the transition and caught a line out from Russell Westbrook. When he went to the perimeter, Giannis Antetokounmpo was back on the defensive and managed to make a miraculous save.

He couldn’t get there in time, and Davis was thrown to the ground while apparently receiving a contact from the MVP twice. When he didn’t get the call, Los Angeles Lakers benches rose and Davis stared at the nearest official with disgust. He ended the night with 18 points, nine rebounds and no free-throw effort in Los Angeles’ 109-102 loss to Milwaukee Bucks.

After the game, Lakers coach Frank Vogel was quick to criticize the move. And more than that, he said the team took their complaints to the league.

“I think the fact that Anthony Davis didn’t get a free throw is a bit bewildering,” Vogel said. “And that’s what we’ve been communicating with the federation.”

There was a big disparity in free throws in the game, as the Bucks hit 24 compared with just 12 for the Lakers. And about that particular game in the third quarter, Davis and the Lakers have a valid claim. There’s obvious body contact from Giannis’ bottom, and it looks like he’s brought him up and out of this frozen frame.

However, it was only one play, and missed calls still occurred. Overall, there doesn’t seem to be much to complain about Davis’ free throws. To counter the Bucks, he mostly chose jumpers, many of which were out of fashion, and only 5 of his 15 attempts were successful. He was simply not aggressive enough to require multiple trips to the line.

Meanwhile, while many stars have seen their free-throw attempts destroyed due to the league’s new rule change, Davis’ efforts are nearly identical to last season’s. His 5.8 free throws per game (compared to 5.9 last season) is 11th best in the league.

If you’ve looked through each game, you can obviously find calls that referrals have missed, and it’s the coach’s job to publicize his players, but the Lakers won’t get much. sympathy for this.
