Fox News host Trace Gallagher pressed Senator John Barrasso (R-WY) briefly on Sunday about the GOP senator’s refusal to support raising the debt ceiling, wondering why Barrasso is against this because it covers government authorized expenses.
After Thanksgiving break, US Senate Get ready for a very busy and stressful next few weeks. The Democrats, who have a slim majority in the room, will not only be tasked with trying to figure out how to resolve intra-party controversies. Better social spending rebuilding plan but they are also forced to do it alone in raising the debt limit before the government runs out of money next month.
After Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) reached an agreement in October to allow Democrats to pass a short-term debt extension, he swore that Republicans would not provide any further support in raising the debt ceiling. In fact, the Kentucky senator told President Joe Biden that he was even willing to let the United States default on its national debt.
Interview with Barrasso on Fox News Sunday, Gallacher – filling in for anchor Chris Wallace – raised the Republican Party’s fickleness in raising the debt ceiling, noting that the GOP’s excuses don’t really make all that much sense.
“You talk about Republicans being against the Build Back Better thing, they’re also against raising the debt limit. Mitch McConnell said it would only trigger Democratic spending,” Gallagher said. “But The Wall Street Journal says, and I’m quoting here sir, “a vote to raise the debt limit does not authorize new spending, but it essentially allows the treasury to raise money to pay for the expenses that the government allowed.” noted that Barrasso’s home state would be affected if the federal government were forced to default on its debt because Congress refused to extend the debt ceiling.
“It’s important to point out in your state, this is paying for things like nearly 30,000 people receiving SNAP benefits. Of course, it’s food benefits; 33,000 students are eligible for free or reduced price school lunches. So a lot of benefit from this for your state, senator,” Gallagher continued. “So why are you against it?”
Instead of answering directly Fox News Sunday Questioned by moderators, Barrasso instead remained on the same page and blamed everything on Democrats.
“In my state, I am a member of the state senate,” he replied. “Our organization requires us to balance our annual budget and live within our means as families need to, and the federal government has to do the same.”
Barrasso added: “This is all about Democratic Party spending. This is 100 percent for them. If you remove the accounting gimmicks, this bill that Democrats are proposing is $4 trillion in additional spending. Not a single Republican will vote on the bill or raise the debt ceiling. This belongs to the Democrats.”
Gallagher, meanwhile, got on the right track and turned the conversation to inflation and gas prices.
