In a Fox News panel on Wednesday, a former education secretary suggested that exorcists are missing from efforts to prevent mass shootings.
Former Reagan cabinet member Bill Bennett said more needs to be done on several fronts to recognize warning signs about affected individuals and prevent them from gaining access to firearms.
“I think you could strengthen the Red Flag laws. Surely people need to pay attention to that. It’s tough when parents don’t do their jobs to make up for it. Also, the police need to pay more attention, and schools need to pay more attention,” Bennett told Bret Baier.
The 21-year-old suspect, who allegedly killed seven and injured dozens more in a July 4 parade outside of Chicago, had a history of worrying behavior. But despite attempting suicide and threatening to kill his family, he was granted a state gun license after his father signed his application, and the suspect legally purchased online the semi-automatic rifle that police believed he was using on Monday .
“I’m not sure we’re going deep enough,” Bennett continued. “Yes, I think you need the police. You definitely need parents. You need schools. You need to clean up social media. You need all of that. But you know, maybe you also need an exorcist.”
“Before your audience shakes their heads, if you look at these boys, these men, these young men, they have profound spiritual problems. Deep. Few venture into the labyrinthine lairs of the internet far below, and I don’t recommend it. It’s ugly stuff,” Bennett said, echoing Tucker Carlson’s Tuesday complaint about the influence of social media, video games and porn on young men. “Where are the ministers? Where are the rabbis? The priests?”
“I don’t want to suggest anything that would seem farcical to many of your audience, but I think the realm of religion should be included here,” Bennett continued.
“I think there is a deeply spiritual void that these young men have in their hearts and souls and I think it needs to be addressed. And honestly, I don’t think we’re getting anywhere with these externalities, important as some of them are. And they can be. We have to do everything, but we still have to do more.”
