Football legend John Madden dies aged 85

There are some big names in sports that are so famous, whether you watch sports or not, you know who they are. Names like Michael Jordon, Tom Brady and Wayne Gretzky seem to be carved into the stone. One of those names is John Madden who sadly passed away Tuesday morning at the age of 85.

Even for a non-sports person like me, I know who John Madden is. Of course, it wasn’t a short installment of EA’s Madden NFL game series that bears his name. Don’t limit words: before Madden, sports games were, well, very engaging kind of thing. When Madden first entered the soccer video game scene in the ’80s, his desire was first and foremost for quality. He refuses to lend his name to the game if it has less than 11 players each team. Madden is one of the most loved and respected coaches in NFL history, where his tenure for the Oakland Raiders is (then) legendary.

After retiring from coaching, Madden turned to what would make him a household name across the country: broadcast commentary. Madden brought something to the stall that no one else had before him. He can analyze plays clearly and succinctly that anyone can understand. His expression is like “Boom!” and “Doink!” His commentary is iconic and helps draw even the most demanding viewers into the game.

A great loss for sports and gaming

Madden is also a bigger-than-life personality with a serious attitude that fans and players alike love. After every Thanksgiving game he comments on, he’ll give his players a “baby duck” — that’s a chicken stuffed inside a duck, in case you didn’t know. The NFL did not give a cause of death, but his loss was felt around the country.

It’s hard to imagine sport game there will be no Madden influence. But it’s safe to bet that they’ll be much worse off than they are now. Our hearts go out to John Madden’s friends and family. Football legend John Madden dies aged 85
