Fisherman’s Heart

MINNEHAHA COUNTY, SD (KELO) – A South Dakota a grateful man after what his family calls a “bizarre” fishing accident.

Todd Theseenvitz is fishing on the lake near Clark, South Dakota, on July 7th when the unbelievable happened.

Theseenvitz was spinning a large northern rod up to the surface when the hook broke.

“I saw the lower bouncer flying towards me in slow motion,” he said. “I thought it just hit my chest, but when it hit my chest, I felt something right here and then I realized it was stuck inside of me.”

“It went into my left ventricle in my heart. Have one that surrounds your heart. It went through there and into the heart muscle itself,” he said.

Theseenvitz is fishing with his wife and daughter Keanna Thesenvitz, a nurse.

“My first instinct was not to pull it out, but let it stay in. Whenever anything happens, you immediately want to get rid of it because you think that will help,” says Keanna Thesenvitz.

Marie Theseenvitz, Todd’s wife, steered the boat back to the marina, which was full of first responders.

“Every wave that came in made him scream in more pain, so it was stressful, and I just kept looking over my shoulder, but I knew that Keanna had him and I knew she would. take care of. his,” said Marie Thesenvitz.

Once they were out of the water, Thesenvitz was taken by ambulance to the hospital and then airlifted to Sioux Falls, where he surgically removed what was left of the bottom bar.

“They’re like a one in a million chance that you’re still here with us. If I pull it out, they say within 30 minutes you are definitely dead,” Thesenvitz said.

“Told my wife we should buy some lottery tickets that day, you know you never know, but this is better than winning the lottery,” Thesenvitz said.

Theseenvitz is considering the circumstances well, but he must not lift anything over 10 pounds. He will have several follow-up appointments to help him decide when he can return to work as well as when he can fish again.
