Finland’s Prime Minister Sanna Marin undergoes a drug test after wild partying videos went viral

Finland’s prime minister says she underwent a drug test to prove she wasn’t using any illegal substances after leaked videos of her party with a pop star confronted her with the mother of all political hangovers.

Sanna Marin, 36, has come under scrutiny in her Nordic homeland after clips showing her dancing with friends earlier this month were released and shared widely on social media. One video reportedly shows the married leader dancing closely with Finnish singer Olavi Uusivirta, while in another, local media reports say, someone is yelling “meal gang” in the background – an apparent reference to cocaine.

A European prime minister hasn’t caused so much stink with celebrations since Boris Johnson’s staff spit drunk in Downing Street. Amid growing outrage from her political opponents and even lawmakers in her own coalition over the possibility she had been on drugs, Marin said she willingly submitted to a drug test on Friday.

“I haven’t done anything illegal,” Marin said at a press conference in Helsinki on Friday. “Even in my teenage years, I didn’t do any drugs.” Marin – who became Finland’s youngest-ever prime minister when she took office in 2019 at just 34 – added that she is entitled to the presumption of innocence while she awaits the results of the test.

Aside from asking about possible drug use, reporters pressed the centre-left politician whether she would have been able to take decisive action after a long night of drinking. “I don’t remember a single time that a sudden situation arose in the middle of the night to go to the State Council Palace,” Marin insisted, referring to the Finnish government headquarters. “I think my performance was really good. There were no known meetings on the days I partied.”

Marin added that although she knew she was being filmed the night of her party, she was upset that the videos had been made public. “I trust that people understand that free time and work can be separated,” she said.

After the first videos of Marin getting drunk were dropped, the Imbroglio got a second wind when a Finnish tabloid released a second round of footage on Friday. It shows Marin dancing with a man named Uusivirta, who keeps leaning close to her neck in a busy Helsinki nightclub.

“It looks to me like he’s just trying to talk in my ear,” Marin said. “It’s like I’m married. These are private matters and I will not comment on them. But I don’t think anything inappropriate is happening in this video.”

This isn’t the first time Marin has had problems because she gets close to others in nightclubs. In December, she apologized for going out to clubs after being around her foreign secretary, who had tested positive for COVID. She was initially told she did not need to isolate at this time, but later missed a text message urging her to avoid social contact.
