Final Fantasy XVI development delayed, a ‘big reveal’ coming in spring

With all the recent talk about Final Fantasy XIV: Endwalker, it’s not hard to forget about the next game in the main series. Square Enix has been working Final Fantasy XVI from the darkness, and be liberated a bittersweet message up there this week. The game hasn’t received much attention since announced more than a year ago. And we still have some time to wait. Due to the issues surrounding the ongoing pandemic, Final Fantasy XVI development has been delayed “almost half a year” – but a reveal will come in the spring.

The weekend message was given by Naoki Yoshida, the game’s producer. Yoshida wrote that he wants to live up to his promise of more information later this year. An update has certainly arrived, but it’s not exactly the most optimistic news. Yoshida wrote: “I regret to inform you that I will not be able to keep that promise as complications stemming from the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic have delayed development of the game by almost half. five.”

According to Yoshida, the pandemic has created a lot of problems for developers. The top issue, of course, is continued growth with employees suddenly having to start working from home. This resulted in “communication from the Tokyo office being impeded.” The delivery of assets from the “outsourced partner” has been delayed or cancelled. Yoshida writes that growth has slowed while the company has spent the better part of the year trying to deal with the new normal.

Final Fantasy XVI delayed, but reveal will come in spring 2022

Fortunately, there will be an update shortly. Yoshida announced that there will be an upcoming “big reveal” for Final Fantasy XVI in the spring of 2022. He didn’t specify what it would be like. But since we’ve only had one reveal trailer so far, I can imagine there’s a lot more that the team wants to showcase. Maybe we’ll see a gameplay trailer? That would be juicy.
