The critically acclaimed MMORPG Final Fantasy XIV is experiencing such a massive increase in player population that Square Enix has set up a new 30-minute logout timer to combat server congestion and long queue times. The change will now automatically log out AFK (leaving the keyboard or “inactive”) players in the game after 30 minutes. Square Enix is increasing the player limit on the server, allowing multiple players to log in at the same time.
Final Fantasy XIV Yes experienced massive player growth around the world over the past few weeks, much of which seems to be the result of a massive exodus of players from other MMORPGs, such as World of Warcraft, as well as being more interested in the game as the final expansion of this current part of the story, Endwalker, is set for release later this year. In an official blog post, FFXIV Director Naoki Yoshida stated that the game experienced an “incredibly massive wave of new players”, especially in the North American and European regions.
To support this, Yoshida noted that the team made two changes. The first is that the game will automatically start up players who are inactive for more than 30 minutes, at which point they will have to queue to log in again to play. He added that the team will “further expand” the feature first to address the expected increase in logins for Endwalker in November.
The second is an increase in the login limit, allowing more players to log into a server at a given time. Specifically, Square Enix recently upgraded its North American data centers to increase log capacity by 18,000; about 750 players per server.
Also, while Square Enix is planning a similar increase for European servers, Yoshida stated that the team is still working on implementing the changes and therefore will not increase the login limit for that region. .
