Today, the draw took place in the UEFA World Cup play-offs to determine the three teams that will participate in the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. The semi-finals will take place on March 24, 2022 with the final on March 29, 2022. And the matches couldn’t be more brutal as each match is a knockout.

Path A

  • Semi-final 1: Scotland vs. Ukraine
  • Semi-final 2: Wales vs Austria

Looking at Path A, anyone can move forward and it should come as no surprise. Ukraine did not perform as well as they expected in the Euros but responded by going undefeated in their remaining World Cup qualifiers to finish against Finland. Scotland is becoming a difficult team to play as they have only been beaten by Denmark in qualifying since the Euro. This includes wins over fellow lane teammate Austria. Wales faced the least impressive opponent of the group to get here but they cannot count towards their day as long as Gareth Bale and Aaron Ramsey are healthy.

  • Semi-final 3: Russia vs Poland
  • Semi-final 4: Sweden vs Czech Republic

Path B is another roll of the dice. The top scorer of the Euro final, Patrik Schick led the Czech Republic team against Sweden becoming a force. Sweden will be without Zlatan Ibrahimovic for suspension but with Emil Forsberg and Alexander Isak there will be plenty of firepower. Poland will rely on Robert Lewandowski as there are very few players in the world that you can take over from him in a one-game match. Russia is the weakest team in the run but that doesn’t mean they can be eliminated.

  • Semifinals 5: Italy vs North Macedonia
  • Semifinal 6: Portugal vs Turkey

This is where things get interesting. Unfortunately for North Macedonia and Turkey, they are grouped with these two knockouts as the favorites and they will need to go through messy games to get in. Final match. Italy is walking away from the European Championship with a second straight World Cup chance while Portugal continues a disappointing year that could be capped by a World Cup without Cristiano Ronaldo.

Intercontinental knockout round

The matches for the knockout round between the countries have also been decided. Concacaf’s fourth-place team will be pitted against the winner of Oceania while the fifth-placed team from CONMEBOL will play the fifth-placed team from Asia.
