Fans Revive Matrix Debating Morpheus’ Fate in Canon

Matrix-Retransmission-Transmission

Reloaded and Revolution may have been very complicated in points, but they still form the final two chapters of a linear story. However, the release Matrix: Resurrection The new trailer and information that came out created some interesting questions regarding the franchise rules.

A summary gives that the fourth part will be received directly after the events of the original 1999, though Neo, Trinity, Niobe, and The Merovingian are all returning, with the latter two not even coming out until the sequel. After months of speculation, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II has finally confirmed that he is indeed playing a young Morpheus, so it’s unclear whether Revival is a sequel, reboot, or something in between that exists in the new build of The Matrix.

Adding another wrinkle to the speech, some longtime fans pointed out that Morpheus technically died after being killed in Online Matrix, touted at the time as an official part of the lore, as you can see below.

Sequel/reboot hybrids are trending these days, but given the nature of the premise, Matrix: Resurrection will have a lot more freedom to create a completely different and completely new spin on mythology. If the sequels are being considered canon in any way, then you have to think Online Matrix and Animeatrix will also join them on the scrapbook as part of an ongoing retooling across the entire chain.
