Holiday travel is in full swing across the country, and with TSA mask requirements in effect through 2022, TikTok Users have come up with creative ways to combat maskne, like the new trend of applying Masque Bar’s Hydrogel half-mask under a cloth mask. Basically, double-masking with these mask allowing tourists to have an anonymous spa day without anyone finding out!

Many TikTokers like Alexa Johnson took this hack to the sky and swore that this method would simultaneously fight acne and hydrate the skin. But does it really work? We spoke with a board-certified dermatologist based in New York Dr. Kavita Mariwalla to confirm the effectiveness of this paper mask trend.

“Depending on the material the mask is made of, it can either soothe the skin or help deliver the ingredients into the skin,” explains Mariwalla. “Moisture and ventilation always help ingredients better absorb into the skin and that is basically what all sheet masks do.”

In her spread TikTok, Johnson used Masque Bar’s Hydrogel Shield & Soothe PPE Facial Hydrogel Mask, specially created to be worn underneath medical masks. It contains hyaluronic acid, aloe and calendula to provide deep moisture and soothe the skin. She says she’s been wearing it for about 45 minutes and it helps rehydrate her skin. Finally, Johnson likes that it doesn’t leave her face feeling dry and cracked like it usually does when applying a mask without a sheet mask underneath. (Pro tip: Apply moisturizer lip balm like she did when she put on her mask for a real self-care moment in the sky.)
