EXCLUSIVE: Louisiana Senate candidate Gary Chambers on why he’s smoking cigarettes for his ad campaign and why marijuana smoking still hasn’t been normalized
In an exclusive interview with JasmineBRAND, Louisiana Senate candidate Gary Chambers explain why he decided to smoke bluntly for his campaign ad.
The 36-year-old says his media team reached out to him with the idea.
“[Erwin Marionneaux, media director] like this image, you know, the seriousness of the message we’re trying to convey. We didn’t want to make it ostentatious, we wanted to be intentional about the tone of the video.”
“We knew it was going to have traction, we knew it was going to do this. We think we’ll probably get an extra million views on this and it’ll definitely put us in the national conversation. “
Chambers estimates that the 37-second clip has racked up around 6 million views in 48 hours on Twitter.
When asked if he was nervous before filming the commercial, Chambers stated:
“I know it’s the right thing to do because we need direction [marijuana] in this country. But the night before, I hit Erwin, I said, ‘uh, we’re sure we want to do this, you know… uh because… you know everything, there was some controversy. and people criticize you. “
“And I’m not against being criticized, I understand that comes with this, but I also want to make sure I don’t waste this platform and the opportunities that I have to try and communicate. I don’t want to do something that I feel is harmful to the common good.”
My first campaign ad, ’37 Seconds.’ #Like me
I hope this ad works to not only denounce the use of marijuana but also create a new conversation to create a path to legalization of this beneficial drug and to pardon those caught for it. backward ideology. pic.twitter.com/G0qKvmUGKD

Chambers also talked about why smoking has not been normalized and how he feels our country can benefit from the plant.
“People are afraid to do it and admit they do it. I know a wide range of professionals, CEOs, executives, politicians, doctors, lawyers, and smokers. But the public doesn’t know.”
“Until it’s not just something that people in arts and entertainment and hip-hop and young, trendy, trendy people do, it’s not going to be mainstream, you know.”
“There are people making millions of dollars for blacks, whites and everything in between, this is big business, this is something that has the potential for us to pave the way, fix schools and do really tangible things for the people that are really visible to the people in this. ”
“But we have to start talking about it and people have to stop pretending that, you know, they don’t do that – no you smoke! Own it. ”
