Excel makes Fnatic difficult in LEC Spring Week 4

Excel Esports let Fnatic down in week 4 of the 2022 LEC Spring Split, improving to 4-5 in the season.

Excel entered today League of Legends match with a record 3-5 against Fnatic who are in second place going into the match and the heavyweights will win. Sitting just outside a playoff spot, an Excel win would mean them closer to the top six, while a win for Fnatic would set them apart from G2 on the leaderboard.

Fnatic tried to surprise Excel during the draft by helping Hylissang pick Rell to pair up with Upset’s Jhin. Hylissang dropped the first health to Excel AD carry Patrik, but Upset killed him when he landed a blind skill on Mikyx while basing.

The first teamfight of the game occurs around the ninth minute and begins when Fnatic tries to infiltrate Excel Markoon’s jungler near his red buff. Excel gained the early kill advantage but was eliminated when Fnatic grabbed Markoon and Nukeduck’s extended kills.

While the early game was relatively even in terms of gold, Fnatic started to control the tempo thanks to jungler Razork’s persistence to snowball the lead over Upset. Fnatic pressured the bot lane and took the first turret of the game, controlling the bottom half of the map.

Excel responded back as they prioritized control at the top and took their first tower in the top lane. Markoon used this top control to engage Hylissang, killing two on the Fnatic side.

Excel then killed 4 members of Fnatic when they tried to kill the dragon. However, Excel took it from them and then Baron shortly after.

Excel had a 6,000 gold lead and strong Baron lanes pushing into Fnatic’s base, but Fnatic managed to stop Excel’s final push and kill Patrik. However, this is not enough to roll back. Excel destroyed the rest of Fnatic and destroyed the Fnatic Nexus, winning.

Fnatic’s loss to Excel makes this their third loss in the past two weeks, bringing them down 6-3. Excel improved their regular season standings, finishing the first half of the Spring Split 4-5 in the all-too-familiar seventh place.

Excel will be looking to remedy this discomfort against Fnatic as they face Team Vitality and BDS in week five and continue to push for their first playoff berth. Fnatic will start the week against SK, followed by a matchup with Vitality as they chase their sole second place in the LEC.
