Brooke Preston was found stabbed to death in her home in West Palm Beach, Florida in March 2017. Theo Newswatch 16, Brooke lived in the house with her close friend, Randy Herman Jr. After growing up together in Pennsylvania and graduating from high school together, they moved to Florida and moved in together.
One morning, Herman woke up from a nap to find blood all over their apartment – and himself. It was all over his hands, his body and the floor. Preston was killed. It looked like he was holding his own hunting knife that was kept on his bedside table.
After trying to figure out the facts, he drove off but didn’t get very far before confessing to the crime. “Someone has been murdered,” Herman said, calling 911. “Just send the police. It’s me. I’m sorry.”

This is where things get complicated, and that’s what the Hulu documentary intends to unpack. Herman claimed to be sleepwalking, as he had no real motive to kill Preston. His lawyers came up with a crazy defense, claiming that he was sleepwalking. He also has a history of it.
However, in May 2019, a grand jury convicted Herman of Preston’s murder. He is currently serving a live sentence in a Florida prison.
