While promoting her new movie South of Heaven, Evangeline Lilly talks about what she believes is the biggest and best change Marvel has made since she joined the MCU for Ant Man.
In one interview with DigitalSpy, she heaped praise on Marvel Studios for their changes to a more diverse universe and cast, especially allowing more heroines to appear in major movie titles.
Evangeline Lilly is part of the cast Ant Man, plays a key role in the typical hero’s training, but is only given her Wasp suit in a post-credits scene. She is now a title hero, starting in 2018 Ant-Man and the Waspand the next three parts Quantumania.
Lilly applauded Marvel Studios heads Kevin Feige, Louis D’Esposito and Victoria Alonso for their commitment to heroines and diverse tenants.
“[Victoria] Alonso has always been a champion for his female superheroes. She championed that from the start,” she told the outlet. She then continued that she was grateful to be a part of the “sausage party,” but reiterated how much she loved the change.
“When I first started, again, I felt as always in my career I was so grateful to be in the Boys’ Club. I was lucky enough to be invited to the hot dog party. I have to pull up my panties and get ready to go, because it’s going to be me and a bunch of guys.
“And now it is very different. I feel like I have female friendships. I feel like a sister. I feel like when I’m unsure or confused, there are other women to reach out to.” she continued.
Lilly has spoken extensively about her excitement about working with women, and the shared experiences they have had, and the joy of working together.
“It is just comfortable and clear. Working with Michelle on Quantumania, It’s great. Obviously it was like having a mother bear accompanying me on set, who was also my sister and co-star. We really rely on each other a lot, and we support each other a lot.
Captain Marvel stars Brie Larson and Lilly became close, as the two confide in each other during the simultaneous production of The Marvels and Ant Man and the Wasp: Quantumania.
“Me and her found each other. I contacted her as things were going. I literally said, ‘Hey, what’s going on, on your side? What do we do with this? ‘.
She further explains how being an actress in the Marvel Universe is empowering when there are so many co-stars there to chat.
“I didn’t have that before. It’s different. Being in the Boys’ Club is different. It’s been a wonderful and comforting thing, and I think it’s helped me feel more empowered in the Marvel space, and I’m grateful that they’ve done a great job of that, too. “
Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania is currently set for a July 2023 release, starring returning cast members like Paul Rudd and Evangeline Lilly, and with Jonathon Majors reprising the role of Kang from Loki.
