Elon Musk’s daughter submits his last name

One of Elon Musk’s children has submitted a name change request, stating that “I no longer want to live with my birth father or be related to him in any way.”

The 18-year-old, whose full new name we’re withholding for privacy reasons, wants to take the maiden name of her mother Justine Musk, who was Elon’s first wife.

A motion to have her gender officially recognized as female and to formally change her name on a new birth certificate was filed in California Superior Court in April and will have a hearing later this month.

TMZ was the first to report on the filing, which suddenly circulated on Reddit and Twitter this weekend.

The Daily Beast emailed Elon Musk about his daughter’s petition ahead of TMZ’s report, and he replied, “She doesn’t want to be a public figure. I think it’s important to defend their right to privacy. Please don’t out anyone against their will – that’s not right.”

Subsequently, several other media, including The Los Angeles Timespublished the message.

The Daily Beast could not reach Justine Musk or her daughter for comment. But the mother tweeted as the story began to spread.

Cathy Renna, communications director for the National LGBTQ Task Force, told The Daily Beast that the group “would never condone or condone a young person coming out because they have famous parents”.

“One would hope that this is a wake-up call for Elon Musk, who has a history of making anti-trans and disrespectful comments, particularly about the use of pronouns. We hope she finds support from other family members and knows she has a large community to support her no matter what,” Renna added.

The CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, a self-proclaimed “free speech absolutist,” came under fire in 2020 for tweeting that “pronouns suck” — even prompting his then-partner Grimes to ask him to turn off his phone because they “cannot support hate.”

Months later, Musk insisted in another tweet that he was “absolutely supportive of trans, but all those pronouns are an aesthetic nightmare.”

In other tweets, Musk has scoffed at the notion of gender differences, tweeting on June 11 that “we are being told at the same time that there are no gender differences and that the sexes are so fundamentally different that irreversible surgery is the only option.”

“Maybe someone smarter than me can explain this dichotomy,” he added.

At the same time, he and singer Grimes – who describes herself as “gender neutral” – have reportedly implemented a gender-neutral parenting system for their two children.

“I don’t want to gender them if they don’t feel that way about their lives,” Grimes previously said during a YouTube live stream.

Musk has five children — twins and triplets — with Justine, who wrote a scathing essay for in 2010 Marie Claire about her marriage.

“Having grown up in South Africa’s male-dominated culture, the will to compete and dominate that made him so successful in business didn’t magically wane when he got home. This, combined with the huge economic imbalance between us, meant that some momentum began to unfold in the months following our marriage,” she wrote.

“Elon’s judgment overruled mine, and he kept making comments about how he found me lacking. “I’m your wife,” I told him repeatedly, “not your employee.” ‘If you were my employee,’ he said just as often, ‘I would fire you.'”

After her divorce, Justine, a successful novelist, continued to keep her children out of the spotlight, although she recently drew attention for tweeting about the Amber Heard-Johnny Depp defamation trial, in which Elon Musk played a supporting role.
