Elon Musk, mad scientist or genius? Neuralink hopes to start implanting brain chips in people by 2022

Over the decades, Hollywood has released dozens, if not hundreds, of movies, featuring the implantation of computer chips in people, often with adverse results.

During the same time period, however, innovators have identified areas where they believe an implantable chip, using Artificial Intelligence and/or robotics, can be developed to improve improve the lives of people with physical disabilities around the world.

Elon Musk say Neuralink, which was co-founded by Musk in 2016, is developing a chip that can be implanted in people’s brains to simultaneously record and stimulate brain activity. It is designed to have medical applications, such as the treatment of severe spinal cord injuries and neurological disorders.

Musk is also the Founder, CEO and Chief Engineer at SpaceX; early stage investor, CEO and Product Architect of Tesla, Inc; founder of The Boring Company; and OpenAI.

Musk is “cautiously confident” that the transplant will allow the extremities and extremities to regain full function. Quadriplegia or quadriplegia is total or partial paralysis of the arms and legs.

‘Our standards for implantation are higher than what the FDA approves, just as our standards for safety are much higher than what the US government requires.’

In an interview broadcast live at The Wall Street Journal’s Summit CEO Council on Monday, Musk was asked what Neuralink plans to do in 2022.

Musk said, “Neuralink is working well on monkeys, and we’re really just doing a lot of testing and just confirming that it’s very safe and reliable, and that the Neuralink device can be safely removed. .”

He added, “We hope to have this in our first people – which will be people with severe spinal cord injuries such as extremities and extremities – next year, pending FDA approval. Browser.”

Musk reiterates the 2022 timeline in a tweet.

In April, Neuralink released a video about a monkey play a video game using a Neuralink device.

Neuralink is not the only company developing brain interface technology. In July, a 20-person biotech company called Synchron was approved by the Food and Drug Administration to begin human trials.
