Much has been made of the impressive names that are on the list of Theranos supporters Holmes attracts: Henry Kissinger, George Schultz, Jim Mattis, Rupert Murdoch, Larry Ellison and others. Names come from the government, business and military sectors – reputation attracts popularity, with much of it stemming from the idea that achievement in one area means competence in another. . It’s the halo effect that has long served men, especially older white men. Their expertise is said to be transferable, and so they consider themselves experts at everything. They believe they are right. They believe their own nonsense. The Silicon Valley mantra of “fake it until you make it” is, after all, just a contrived version of “a lie.” So they believed Holmes.
