EA canceled a Harry Potter MMO because it didn’t think IP would exist

An interview with a former employee of Electronics Arts sheds some light on an ambitious but canceled online multiplayer game by Harry Potter.

Harry Potter may have one major impact on the gaming world in 2022. Massive intellectual property will see the release of an open world action role-playing game in Hogwarts Legacy next year, a title that has a chance to be among the best licensed games in recent memory. However, many years ago, fans seemed to have had a chance to enjoy an ambitious online multiplayer game. Harry Potter game, if it has not been cancelled.

It is common knowledge now that Harry Potter is one of the most popular and beloved franchises in cinema, books and more. However, that is not always the case. Not like Lord of the Rings or some other IP Harry Potter can be compared with, Harry Potter not an entity over fifty years old that has stood the test of time. Only the fourth one Harry Potter book (2000) caused heat in the press when the first book Harry Potter film (2001) was released. Recently, Kim Salzer, EA’s director of product marketing from 2000-2003, informed the video game community about some very interesting Harry Potter a piece of paper. In an interview with Original Gamer Life, Salzer said that she personally participated in a huge MMO for Harry Potter. The game has been developed far enough to have an in-house beta. The team already has an online and offline component to the game. The team even plans to send prizes, ribbons and more to the players. However, the project was “killed” by EA.


Salzer says that the team has carefully studied the project and is very confident in its success Harry Potter MMO. However, the EA seems to have gone through some changes at the time, and they don’t believe the IP will have a shelf life after a year or two. This happened sometime between 2000 and 2003, and perhaps the first movie hasn’t even been released yet. So EA made some forecasts and decided not to bet on Harry Potter. This decision simply proved wrong.

Over the years, Harry Potter The game is mainly linked movies and LEGO titles. It would certainly be interesting to see a major MMO video game start early and live alongside the movies and books for years – updating with each new advancement in the story. Decades later, The fans are so excited about Hogwarts Legacy, a game will have to meet some high expectations.
