E3 digital event was heralded as having issues and “probably” has been cancelled

The ESA recently revealed that E3 2022 won’t take place in a physical setting for the third year in a row, but now it looks like the digital event is “probably” canceled as well.
The cancellation of E3’s physical event due to the COVID-19 pandemic is still having a strong impact on society, with the world slowly embracing the digital era more and more because of the deadly virus.
However, with so many publishers and developers choosing to host their own digital showcases, the need for E3 has become an issue in recent years. Now it looks like there’s no E3 event for 2022 as an insider claimed it was a “mess” and “could have been cancelled”.

E3 2022 Digital Event “Probably” Canceled
The news comes from trusted insider Jeff Grubb, who recently uploaded a short video on his YouTube account discussing the E3 cancellation.
As reiterated by Grubb in his video, the physical E3 event has been canceled by ESA. However, he went on to say that “digital could be aborted too”.
Grubb did not detail exactly why the E3 digital event for 2022 could be canceled but did say it would be a “mess” and that if it continued, things would simply be ” lame” with E3 from other events like Geoff Keighley’s Summer Game Festival.

It didn’t take long for Geoff Keighley to confirm the cancellation of E3 and confirm that Summer Game Festival will return in 2022, with more details about upcoming events.
So while it doesn’t look like E3 will appear in any capacity in 2022, there’s still a lot to look forward to. According to Jeff Grubb, we had the following events take place throughout the year:
- January 27 = Elder Scrolls Online Event / Expansion / DLC
- February 22 – 24 = DICE Summit
- February 25 = Elden Ring Release
- March 21 – 25 = Game Developers Conference
- May 4 = Star Wars Day
- May 26 – 29 = Star Wars Celebration
- Spring 20th Anniversary Event = Kingdom Hearts
- Spring = Final Fantasy XVI Info & Trailer
- June = Virtual E3 / Summer Game Festival (maybe)
- August = Gamescom
Of course, the actual cancellation of E3 for 2022 has been confirmed by the ESA but other details are yet to be shared. Let’s capture this information with a pinch of salt until it is formalized.
