Electronic Entertainment Expo has once again gone digital only due to safety concerns surrounding the current COVID-19 crisis, especially the Omicron variant sweeping the US right now. This will mark the third year in a row that the pinnacle event in the gaming industry will not be held in person at the Los Angeles Convention Center.

Announcement, first reported by GamesBeat, from the Entertainment Software Association, stated that the move was made due to “the health risks surrounding COVID-19.”

“Due to the ongoing health risks surrounding COVID-19 and its potential impact on the safety of exhibitors and attendees, E3 will not be held in person in 2022. I’m still incredibly excited about the future of E3 and look forward to announcing more details soon.”

Last year E3 2021 to be held online only in the same week as Geoff Keighley’s Summer Festival, while The 2020 version has been completely canceled thanks to the global outbreak of Covid-19. While late 2021 we’re starting to see live events return, such as PAX West and most recently the Game Awards, it looks like the current spike in infections, particularly is due to the Omicron variant, which caused ESA to destroy this year’s live event.

While this certainly means we’ll see E3 in some form online this summer, when GamesBeat pressed ESA on the exact details, the rep simply replied that they were “excited about the possibility” capabilities of an online event.”

The Electronic Entertainment Expo is often considered the biggest event on the game industry’s calendar each year, with tens of thousands of professionals, journalists, and most recently fans flocking to downtown LA each June. The event typically sees some of the biggest announcements of the year, as well as high profile showcases from developers and publishers. While the event’s relevance has waned in recent years with big names in the industry pulling out of the fair altogether, it remains one of the biggest events in North America for the industry. . However, what will it look like in the future after many years without its direct presence.
