‘Dune’ Trailer: Oscar Isaac’s “Daddy” Moment With Timothée Chalamet is a Big Deal

The beginning is a fragile time, and so leads to the release of any major sci-fi or fantasy blockbusters in 2021. Not too much. Sand dunes. Latest Sand dunes The trailer reveals much about the film’s ambitious plot, from Fremen raids to sandworm attacks to the heart of Harkonnen’s power. However, the most exciting time for rank players Sand dunes fans may not be an excerpt of a battle or see Lady Jessica (Rebecca Ferguson) go all “Water of Life” in Freman. No, the part that makes this Sand dunes Megafan pressed the most is Oscar Isaac“Daddy” moment with Timothée Chalametby Paul Atreides. Sure, it’s the ovary-blasting thing that dreams are made of, but the father/son’s gentle conversation has a deeper and deeper meaning to the mythology of Sand dunes What you might notice…
Denis Villeneuve’s Sand dunes is a lavish adaptation of the classic science fiction novel of the same name by Frank Herbert. The book is set thousands of years in the future, when humanity has conquered the stars thanks to the power of a mysterious substance known as the spice mélange. Spices are the most important currency in the universe. It powers interstellar space flight and heals most diseases. It can even give some eaters a ton of unnatural abilities, like higher awareness, psychic abilities, and faster intellect. It is worth noting that the spice is only found on one planet in the entire universe: the desert planet Arrakis, nicknamed Dune. And controlling it, and the spice trade, was both an honor and a colossal consequence for the great feudalists that dominated the galaxy. (Oh, and Dune has its own native population, the Fremen. So that’s complicated!)
Sand dunesThe story centers on House Atreides, a noble family tasked with wresting control of Arrakis from the villainous House Harkonnen. Duke Leto (Oscar Isaac) is considered a great leader, but Achilles’ Heel is his family. He is madly in love with his spouse, Lady Jessica (Rebecca Ferguson), a Bene Gesserit, who was sent only to his court to seduce him for religious and political reasons (which we shall see later). research). And he is devoted to his son, Paul (Timothée Chalamet). That’s what Dune’s latest trailer needs to emphasize.
At about 2:24 minutes into the trailer, Paul says, “Dad, what if I’m not the future of House Atreides?” When the trailer replays Paul and his mother on the run from a sandworm in Arrakis, Duke Leto says, “A great man doesn’t seek to lead. He was called to it. But if your answer is ‘no’, you’ll still be the only thing I ever needed you to be: my son. “
Now is the sweet moment of a loving father telling his child, no, it’s okay if he can’t follow in his footsteps. Being yourself is enough. And yet, this scene is much more than that.
One of the things that is very confusing for Sand dunes newbie is the whole tool Bene Gesserit / Kwisatz Haderach. Simply put, the Bene Gesserits are a sect of female saints with mystical powers who give guidance to the male leaders of this universe. They are charming, motherly, stealthy and dangerous. But their real goal is not political power. It is using centuries, if not millennia, of genetic hybridization to create the ultimate human, known as Kwisatz Haderach.
So what does this have to do with the sweet father-son moment? (Heavy sigh) Well, the Bene Gesserit believe they are about to breed the Kwisatz Haderach. By their calculations, a daughter of the Atreides must marry a son of their rival, the Harkonnens. That will not only end the political feud, but will also unite the bloodlines so that Kwisatz Haderach will be born into the next generation.
Remember how we said that Lady Jessica, Paul’s mother, was sent to House Atreides to seduce Duke Leto? Well, she is said to have a Girl. (YES, BENE GESSERIT CAN CONTROL THE CHILDREN’S SEXUAL FROM THEIR WOMEN. SAVE IT, SCIENCE.) Apparently, she did. Not. She defied orders and gave Duke Leto the child he want… one Boy. Not only does this mean that feuds between clans cannot be repaired, as the Harkonnens have only male heirs, but millennia of careful breeding could be ruined. Just because Duke Leto wanted a sweet son of his own.
What stands out about this simple exchange in Sand dunes The trailer is that it not only subtly conveys this information, but that it does so with real emotional power. Past adaptations have well understood the pressure Paul feels when taking on leadership roles or even feeling torn between his father’s legacy and his mother’s ambitions. But this trailer suggests that Villeneuve’s version of the story will lean heavily towards the human emotions in the story. After all, that’s why the book remains such a beloved classic. Not just for sandbugs or stillness suits, but because the characters feel real.
Oscar Isaac’s Sand dunes Dad’s time for this Sand dunes fans hope this adaptation can finally carry the true spirit of the book.
Sand dunes premieres in theaters and on HBO Max on October 22.
