Drake befriends Oklahoma City couple at Thunder game, shares selfie with caption ‘my new parents’

Drake rapped on DJ Khaled’s “No New Friends” in 2014, but this rule doesn’t seem to apply to new parents. The Grammy-winning artist befriended a couple in Oklahoma City while attending the Rockets-Thunder game on Wednesday and Drake later posted an Instagram selfie with the pair – 71-year-old Renee Stanley and Jim Stanley is 75 years old.

His caption on the post called the pair – who didn’t know how famous the rapper was at first – as “my new parents”.

“Well, I know his name is Drake,” said Renee NS Oklahoman, “but I don’t know he’s a rapper, and I don’t know how famous he is. But let me tell you, others around me let me know.”

At first, the Stanleys had no clue they were sitting next to a megastar with a combined 139.6 million Instagram and Twitter followers. Their conversation begins with Jim admiring Drake’s coat and Drake then complimenting Renee’s earrings.

Drake and the Stanleys then talked about everything from hockey to sports in Oklahoma and Lincoln Riley, which Jim alleges allowed Drake to let his guard down.

“I said, ‘That sumbitch brought everyone to USC,'” Jim recalls. “And he laughed about it, so maybe he thought, these people are so clueless and I can talk to them.”

When Drake’s selfie with the couple went viral, Renee said friends from Alaska to New York City contacted her. Even Renee’s grandson, an Oklahoma student, told her, “Oh my gosh, Grandma, I was following Drake and I saw MOTHER!”

Still, the connection the Stanleys built with Drake meant more to them than any viral moment. Jim told the Oklahoman that he appreciates Drake’s ability to have a “conversation like anyone sitting next to you at a game” despite his celebrity status.

Jim said: “Sometimes when you think about celebrities and how they can be real snobs, he was just a regular guy and was very close to us. “I appreciate that.”

And Drake showed his appreciation to the Stanleys with a kind gesture before leaving the arena.

“At the end of the game,” said Renee, “he stood up to look at me and I said, ‘Drake, you’re so cute.’ And he kissed my hand. “
