Don’t look at the director explaining how he managed to attract such a famous cast

Don't look up

Trailer for Netflix’s All-Star Comedy Don’t look up hit the internet not too long ago, and the story is much more than simply one or two famous faces appearing in a scene or two, with director Adam McKay admitting he had to make his script even crazier with the sequence of events made 2020 an unforgettable year for all the wrong reasons.

The main plot twists follow Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence as a pair of low-level astronomers who discover a comet is on its way to collide directly with Earth, so they decide to embark on a trip transnational to ensure that an action plan can be put in place to avert global devastation.

Of course, the hijinks are sure to make sure, and there’s plenty of real A-list talent that’s set to drop at various points throughout the story. In an interview with Deadline, McKay explains how he brought together so many big names for the same project.

First to enter the door is Jen Lawrence. I wrote the role of Kate Dibiasky for her. Not giving anything, hers is the hardest way, is to tell the truth. Who is better at telling the truth than Jen Lawrence? I love it when she does it, in movies like Silver Linings Playbook and when you hang out with her, she gets that vibe. That role was written for her. I wrote Dr. Teddy Oglethorpe for Rob Morgan. I worked with him on the Lakers series we’re working on for HBO and I just love him. So there were a few people that I knew that I wanted, and thank God, they got what I was trying to do and they were there. And then, as every director imagines, you have the President in your movie, and you have to go to Meryl Streep.

I never imagined she would say yes, once you get Meryl Streep, the others are more likely to be interested. We’ve received great readings about the script from so many actors who say they’ve been waiting for a project like this, given how crazy the world situation has become. They’re excited to be collaborating on something that tries to handle the madness of our modern world. They’re excited that this is a comedy, after all the years we’ve suffered, to be able to laugh a little bit about this madness, to try to find that distance to laugh. Meryl joined, then Cate Blanchett. Himesh Patel, Tyler Perry. Then, Jonah Hill, I had to let him play Jason…”

Timothee Chalamet, Meryl Streep, Jonah Hill, Mark Rylance, Tyler Perry, Ron Perlman, Michael Chiklis, Ariana Grande, Kid Cudi, Cate Blanchett, Himesh Patel, Matthew Perry, Chris Evans and many more will join DiCaprio and Lawrence in Don’t look upand that gives McKay the industry clout and reputation to get pretty much the people he wants these days. | Don’t look at the director explaining how he managed to attract such a famous cast
