(WJW) – Donald J. Trump, the 45th President of the United States, spoke about his thoughts on renaming the Cleveland Indians to Guardians.

The baseball club announced the team’s new name Friday saying it’s a nod to the statues along the Memorial Bridge of Hope.

Here is Trump’s full statement:

“Can anyone believe that the Cleveland Indians, a longstanding and cherished baseball franchise since taking on this name in 1915, is changing its name to the Guardians? What a disgrace, and I guarantee that the people most angry about it are the many Indians of our Country. It wouldn’t be an honor to have a team called the Cleveland Indians, and would it be disrespectful to tear off the names and emblems of those jerseys? The people of Cleveland couldn’t be happier and I, as a FORMER baseball fan, couldn’t believe things like this were happening. A small group of people, with completely insane ideas and policies, are forcing these changes to destroy our culture and heritage. At some point, people won’t take it anymore! “

On the other hand, White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki said that the White House certainly supports the new name for Cleveland’s baseball team and differs from former President Trump in that regard (among others…)”

Fans have mixed reaction about it. Some said they would have liked the team to be renamed Spider-Man, a throwback to the club’s name from the 1890s.
