Which doctor? returned for the winter special this New Year’s Day, and in doing so it introduced a groundbreaking storyline for Jodie Whittaker’s Time Lord.

While every previous modern Doctor has had some kind of romance, Whittaker’s thirteenth incarnation has never had love in the past three seasons. But that could be about to change, as the latest episode hints that she’s about to become LGBTQ+.

Titled “Eve of the Daleks,” the special saw the Doctor and friends trapped in a time loop with a team of Daleks. When Sarah (guest star Aisling Bea) comments that her mother always tells her that “nice freaks” are the ones to keep, Yaz (Mandip Gill) looks to the doctor. Dan (John Bishop) later admits to Yaz that he saw this and encourages her to tell the Doctor how she feels. Yaz suggests that she’s still dealing with her sexuality and isn’t ready to open up yet.

Once a matchmaker, when alone with the Doctor, Dan admitted to her that Yaz had feelings for her. Dan also says that he thinks the doctor is holding back her feelings for Yaz. The time traveler refused to be manipulated, but she continued to think about it with a guilty expression.

While the episode doesn’t go so far as the Doctor and Yaz going public with their feelings for each other, these scenes are crucial as they confirm that the pair actually have a stronger bond than just friendship, that’s what many fans. been selected for many years.

So, if this storyline comes to fruition in the next two specials, before Whittaker reincarnates as The fourteenth doctor is unknown, that would make Thirteen the first openly LGBTQ+ Doctor.

Which doctor? returns this spring with “The Legend of the Sea Demons”.
