That’s all you need to know.
Are David Tennant and Catherine Tate returning?
It has been officially announced that Tennant and Tate will both return to showrunner Russell T. Davies’ BBC show.
Davies ran Doctor Who from its 2005 revival to 2010, collaboration with Christopher Eccleston (close to meWhere hands touch) and Tennant as Doctor. He left the show in 2010 after the end of the fourth season.
The current showrunner is Chris Chibnall, who was succeeded by Steven Moffat in 2018.
Davies will return as showrunner for Chibnall season 14 Doctor Who12 years after his first resignation.
Davies posted the news on his Instagram account, much to the surprise and delight of fans.
Alongside a picture of Tennant and Tate, he wrote: “YOU ARE BACK! The Doctor and Donna! But how?! He erased her memory! If she remembers, she will die! But, but… is it a flashback? A dream sequence? A lie? A parallel universe?! old doctor? The land of fiction?! You’ll find out in 2023 when Doctor Who hits its 60th diamond! – Anniversary!”
In an announcement for the BBC, Davies added: “They’re back! And it looks impossible – first we announce a new doctor, and then an old doctor, next to the wonderful Donna, what on earth is happening?
“Maybe that’s a missing story. Or a parallel world. Or a dream, or a trick, or a flashback.
“The only thing I can confirm is that when two of our biggest stars reunite for the fight of their lives, it’s going to be spectacular.”
How did David Tennant and Catherine Tate’s Doctor Who story end?
Fans of the show will remember that the 10th Doctor shared his last episode with Donna Noble in a two-parter The end of time in 2010.
The Doctor was forced to erase Donna’s memories of their time together after gaining all of his knowledge – something her brain can’t handle and that threatened to kill her.
Finally, we see Donna marrying her fiancé, Shaun Temple (played by Karl Collins). The Doctor anonymously delivers Donna a winning lottery ticket that will solve all of her financial problems.
The Doctor, whose regeneration was triggered after sacrificing himself for Wilfried Mott, Donna’s grandfather, visits his former companions, most notably Rose Tyler, played by Billy Piper (I hate suzie, collateral).
Once inside the TARDIS, the 10th Doctor regenerates into his next incarnation – the 11th Doctor. Tennant’s last words as the 10th Doctor are, “I don’t want to go.”
We saw Tennant briefly reprise his role as the 10th Doctor in the 2013 episode Doctor’s Day for the program’s 50th anniversary alongside the 11th Doctor, played by Matt Smith (house of the dragon, disease).
Who’s the new doctor?
Commenting on the news, Gatwa said: “There are no right words to describe how I feel. A mixture of deeply honoured, beyond excited and of course a little scared.
“This role and show means so much to so many around the world, including me, and each of my incredibly talented predecessors has handled this unique responsibility and privilege with the utmost care. I will do my utmost to do the same.
“Russell T. Davies is almost as iconic as the Doctor himself and to work with him is a dream come true. His writing is dynamic, exciting, incredibly intelligent and fraught with danger. An actor’s metaphorical playground.
“The whole team was so welcoming and really put their heart into the show. And as scary as it is, I’m aware that I’m joining a truly supportive family.
“Unlike the Doctor, I may only have one heart, but I give everything for this show.”
Very popular outside of Netflix sex educationthe 29-year-old Rwandan-Scottish actor hasn’t had much success on screen – he starred in a few episodes of the 2015 miniseries stone mouth, as Timidius in Terrible Stories: The Movie and in the 2021 movie The last letter from your lover.
Instead, Gatwa has a lot more stage experience. After graduating from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland in 2013, Gatwa secured a place on the Dundee Repertory Theater’s drama graduation programme.
He has acted in a number of theater productions including Victoria, The BFG, And Then There Were None, Romeo & Juliet, Shakespeare in Love, A Midsummer Night’s Dream and The rivals.
