Doctor Strange has some of the most powerful enemies in Marvel comic lore. As the Sorcerer Supreme, this has narrative implications. Dormammu and Nightmare are far greater threats than most of the non-magical villains in Marvel’s arsenal. After all, he would quickly dispatch Spider-Man or Daredevil villains, just as Superman would do the same with Batman villains.
Doctor Strange 2 promises to be a sequel that is both fun and potentially very dark compared to its predecessor. Marvel Studios was able to amp up the hype for the movie by subverting expectations and using an ambiguous villain. Wanda Maximoff, The Scarlet Witch, should be the main villain in Doctor Strange 2. Yes, the Avenger guy will become a powerful ally for the good doctor, but a superhero turned into a superhero. Hero is even more attractive.
Wanda Maximoff is one of the most tragic Marvel superheroes both in the comics and the big screen. Being both Magneto’s daughter and one of the most powerful mutants would do it to one person.
Before Doctor Strange was even introduced, Wanda was introduced in the original Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) as a villain in Vengeance Squad: Age of Ultron. She joined Captain America’s defection team in Captain America: Civil War and jailed for her efforts, continues to act as a villain. She has to face excruciating pain in Avengers: Infinity War when Thanos killed her beloved Vision not once but twice. The wielder of magic finds redemption in Avengers: Endgame when she helped take down Thanos and save the world.
In WandaVision, the protagonist uses magic that has imprisoned an entire New Jersey town to live out her ultimate fantasy of having Vision and their two children by her side. Even though her actions were the result of trauma and grief, it doesn’t justify them. Hurting people hurts people, and Wanda causes a lot of psychological and physical suffering for the townspeople to maintain their new lifestyle. There’s been speculation that Mephisto (Marvel’s head of evil) will show up and prove himself as the season’s puppet super director, but the real villain is Wanda.
Scarlet Witch becomes even stronger in the end of the WandaVision after obtaining the magic book called Darkhold. Her power can become infinite, surpassing even Doctor Strange. The doctor may have to treat her before she causes real damage to the world, after showing what she can do for a town.
Wanda Maximoff is probably the strongest character in the MCU at the moment. She can use an unreliable amount of magic and control masses of people with nothing but her mind. So far, her more sinister actions have been reactionary. The deaths of her parents, brother, and Vision brought her life’s worth of pain and trauma at a young age, and she reacted harshly to these emotions. What happened when she gives purpose to her rage? If she should be proactive with her abilities rather than reactive, she could be a real force to be reckoned with for Doctor Strange.
Arguably the most famous (or infamous) Marvel comic event surrounding The Scarlet Witch was 2005 US House. The event begins with Wanda Maximoff committing genocide against her fellow mutants by just uttering three words: “No more mutants.”
Mutants don’t exist (or at least the audience doesn’t know about them) in the MCU. So, if instead of saying, “No more mutants,” what if Wanda whispered “No more heroes” or “No more Avengers”? This will lead to a lot of chaos. Wanda Maximoff has the world at her fingertips, whether she knows it or not, whether she wants to or not.
US House To be one of Marvel’s darker comic events. It’s grim that even our friendly neighbor Spider-Man announces that when he hits Wanda, he’ll kill her. This is extremely unusual for a wall crawler, and shows just how much damage Wanda has caused.
Also, the good people at House of Ideas are reversible US House plot. Instead of destroying the mutant race, Wanda Maximoff could introduce Homo Superior. As in the comics, this could cause widespread fear on Earth, as humans will no longer be at the top of the traditional food chain. This could simultaneously bring the X-Men into existence and bring along evil mutants, a task that Dr. Strange and The Avengers must tackle.
No matter which way Doctor Strange 2 plays out, it will use Wanda Maximoff’s newfound powers and make her superhuman. She was already halfway through WandaVision, it’s just a matter of how far and how dark Marvel Studios wants to take the story.
