Director of famous movies like District 9 and Chappie Neill Blomkamp is teaming up with developer Gunzilla Games to create a new AAA multiplayer shooter title. The Academy-nominated director will join the developer as the Visionary Director and will work with the studio’s commercials “to make sure his vision is workable”. Although the director has no prior game development experience, Blomkamp said that he hopes to use his experience as a screenwriter and mentioned that a game like Remedy’s Control was a title he found “very compelling.”
While Gunzilla Games hasn’t released any games in the past, it boasts experienced developers from other triple-A studios like EA, Ubisoft, and Crytek. And while Neill Blomkamp seems to have a sore thumb when it comes to video game development, the director is technically have previous experience in video games — albeit in a canceled form Halo film by Lord of the Rings Directed by Peter Jackson.
On the topic of video game development, Blomkamp noted that his role will be similar to that of George RR Martin in FromSoftware coming soon Elden Rings, is that he will be responsible for imagining the world and creating a rich storyline and history for the rest of the development team to find a story to tell in that world and a game for everyone to play. . While neither Blomkamp nor Gunzilla Games have revealed any details about the upcoming game, he does mention that the idea of a “near future sci-fi is something really exciting.” .” The director also notes that games, where players are dropped into a “synthetic three-dimensional environment,” are among his favorites citing games like Control from Remedy as an example.
My analogy is that movies and passive narrative formats will be like books on a shelf in the sense that they are always there and people will always absorb them – but what dominates when you come home from work and you doing something is going to be some kind of highly interactive… a place you’re falling into, a three dimensional world where something is happening over time… I think it’s going to get pretty unbelievable where, go where. So I just want to be a part of it.
Neill Blomkamp ended the interview with his own prediction of how games will evolve in the future, saying that he believes they will “become 20th-century movies… the stuff of literary entertainment domination.”
