Derek Jeter says Carlos Correa’s Golden Glove Award criticism ‘doesn’t even warrant a response’
Earlier this week, a shortstop of a freelance agent Carlos Correa Raise eyebrows all over New York City when he mocked the number of Golden Glove Awards was won by longtime Yankee captain Derek Jeter during his decorated career.
“Derek Jeter, how many Golden Gloves did he win? Five, I think he won. … Derek Jeter doesn’t deserve any,” Correa said during an appearance on the “Me Gustan” podcast. Los Deportes”, hosted by former major league midfielder Carlos Baerga.
Of course, it was only a matter of time before someone asked Jeter about Correa’s comment. That moment came on Friday, when SportsGrid’s Craig Mish discussed the topic with Jeter, now chief executive officer of Miami Marlins. Jeter’s reaction, as seen below, was captured on film and shared by CBS Miami’s Mike Cugno:
“I heard about it. I didn’t think much of it; I don’t know how my name came out. My Spanish isn’t that good. I haven’t watched it yet; I don’t know his name. How are you given, but it doesn’t even guarantee a response,” said Jeter while smiling. “I mean, I could go in different directions but I won’t.”
Jeter, on record, has won five Golden Gloves in his career, with them coming in 2004, 2005, 2006, 2009 and 2010. Of course, Correa isn’t the first individual to question. ask about the value of those wins – the public Advanced defensive stats are notoriously unreliable, but Jeter was considered below average for most of those seasons. The only exception was in 2009, when he was worth three defensive runs, according to Baseball Reference calculations.
While Correa’s comment (and his participation in Houston Astros‘sign-stealing scandal) won’t win him any fans in New York, he’s still likely to be considered by Yankees as a potential addition to the season. Those are the perks of being the highest ranked freelance agent in a loaded class.
