Democratic Senate candidate allegedly beaten by opponents at abortion rally
An anti-abortion protest in Rhode Island ended in chaos on Friday after a state Senate nominee was apparently punched in the face by her Republican opponent.
“I am a reproductive rights organizer and a candidate for the State Senate. Last night, after speaking at our Roe rally, my Republican opponent — a police officer — violently assaulted me,” Democratic candidate Jennifer Rourke said tweeted Saturday morning.
The alleged attacker, Jeann Lugo, is an officer with the Providence Police Department.
