Multi-hyphenate powerhouse Debbie Allen gave a robust speech on the 2021 Emmy Awards, accepting her Governors Award with a rallying cry to girls “throughout this nation and the world over, from Texas to Afghanistan”: “Declare your energy, declare your voice, sing your music, inform your tales. It should make us a greater place.”
Earlier than taking the stage, Jada Pinkett Smith, Ellen Pompeo, Ava Duvernay, and Michael Douglas paid tribute to Allen’s function as Linda Grant within the musical collection Fame, introducing the dancer, actress, producer, and director while holding canes in their hands.
In her speech, Allen acknowledged her 50-plus-year profession in leisure via tears (“It’s taken loads of braveness to be the one girl within the room more often than not”), shouted out collaborators together with Steven Spielberg and Shonda Rhimes, and politely shut down the timer clocking her speech — “Honey, flip that clock off. I’m paying no consideration to it” — to uproarious applause from the viewers. (Take notes, Scott.)
In keeping with the Emmys website, the Governors Award is introduced to these with an “excellent achievement within the arts and sciences or administration of tv which is both of a cumulative nature or so extraordinary and common in nature as to transcend the scope of the Emmy Awards introduced within the classes and areas of the competitors.” Tyler Perry and the Perry Basis obtained the award in 2020.
Along with her work in Hollywood, Allen is the founding father of the Debbie Allen Dance Academy, a nonprofit targeted on instructing younger individuals the artwork of dance. She has been nominated for 20 Emmys and received 5 instances, together with twice this year.
