Dead Space won’t have microtransactions, say devs

Dead space was announced tonight in EA Play, but its brief trailer offers very little information. Instead, the developers revealed more in the an interview with IGN.

The gist: it’s early days, but they’re trying to stay true to the original game – and no, it won’t have microtransactions.

Although geared towards loyalty, Dead Space is a remake on the basis of a design with modern technology. Creative director Roman Campos-Oriola told IGN that this means they can fulfill the designer’s original intent. “We started with the initial level design of the original Dead Space,” says Campos-Oriola. “What’s interesting is that you can see some of the iterations that were done by the team prior to delivery. In the first chapter you can see some corridors that they wanted to do first in a certain way, and then you can understand why they changed it because of technical limitations or [some other reason]”EA Motive does not have the same technical constraints.

Confirming that Dead Space will be free of microtransactions seems odd. Why is that, when it’s a single player game? But microtransactions were controversially included in Dead Space 3, and EA has had a deep relationship with single-player games over the past decade. Dead Space’s original developers Visceral Games were shut down in 2017, and the player-only Star Wars game they were working on with Amy Hennig, Uncharted director Amy Hennig, was immediately canceled. afterward. The feeling inside EA seems to be that single-player games are a real waste of time when FIFA Ultimate Team, loot boxes, and live services can print money.

EA Motive’s previous game, Star Wars Squadrons, bucked that trend by not having microtransactions and offering a relatively tight package, even though it had a multiplayer mode.

The Dead Space remake suggests EA see more space for single-player games on their roster. “We want to make games that deliver the experience our players are looking for,” EA Director of EA Miele told iGN. “Sometimes it’s a single-player story-centric experience where players can immerse themselves in another world. Focusing on just one genre or model limits the number of players we can reach.”

That can only be a good thing in my eyes. I’m not panicking about the remake trend – you should just play the original Dead Space, it’s still great and less than £5 – but I would adopt any trend that makes for more big budget single player games.
